History

The Golden Pavilion, officially known as Rokuon-ji, was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. After his death, the villa was converted into a Zen temple. The temple was burned down multiple times throughout history, with the current structure dating back to 1955. It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
